Ce inseamna San Francisco? Podul Golden Gate, insula Alcatraz si inchisoarea sa faimoasa unde a poposit pentru cativa ani temutul Al Capone, cladirea Transamerica Pyramid, Cartierul chinezesc, Coit Tower, cluburile gay din Castro, Lombard Street si strazile in panta pe care tramvaiele trase de cablu coboara spre Fisherman’s Wharf, districtul Haight-Ashbury cu multimea de hippies, generatia beat si “Summer of Love”, ceata care acopera cartierele din vest cateva luni pe an si expresia, gresit atribuita lui Mark Twain, “cea mai friguroasa iarna pe care am vazut-o a fost o vara petrecuta in San Francisco”. La toate acestea se adauga insa si “cultura ecologica” impresionanta pe care o au locuitorii din San Francisco si eforturile aproape fanatice de a face ca orasul lor sa fie “cel mai verde” din Statele Unite.

Bashia Mohammed, 60, gathered salt in a drainage pool on the outskirts of Diwaniya. It is her family’s only source of income now that its rice farm has dried up.
Rice farmers surveyed their dry field near a village on the outskirts of Najaf. Iraq is now importing more and more grain.“Maaku mai!” they shout, holding up their rusty sickles. “There is no water!”
The Euphrates is drying up. Strangled by the water policies of Iraq’s neighbors, Turkey and Syria; a two-year drought; and years of misuse by Iraq and its farmers, the river is significantly smaller than it was just a few years ago. Some officials worry that it could soon be half of what it is now.

Russian officials have taken a five-year-old Siberian girl into care, saying that she had apparently been “brought up” by cats and dogs.
The girl, who is unable to speak, was discovered living in a squalid flat in the Siberian city of Chita.
Police said she had never been allowed outside and had adopted the behaviour of the animals she lived with.
They said she now “barked like a little dog” and jumped at the door when her carers left the room.

Ken Johnston, fostul manager al departamentului Data and Photo Control, care a lucrat in laboratorul NASA in timpul programului lunar Apollo, a facut recent o serie de declaratii incendiare, care au socat opinia publica americana.
Conform fostului astronaut, in timpul misiunii Apollo au fost identificate pe Luna vechi ruine de origine artificiala si o tehnologie necunoscuta anterior de a controla gravitatia in momentul aselenizarii. Astronautii au facut fotografii ale obiectelor pe care le-au gasit, insa NASA a ordonat ca aceste imagini sa fie distruse. Johnston nu s-a conformat ordinului si dupa ce le-a tinut in secret timp de 40 de ani, le-a dat publicitatii recent, incluzandu-le intr-o cartea “Dark Mission: the Secret History of NASA”, scrisa in colaborare cu un alt cercetator stiintific, Richard C. Hoagland.
