A Revolutionary Compact – The Canon PowerShot S90 :: Articles :: www.hardwarezone.com®
And that’s what makes the S90 so exciting. Canon has somehow managed to take the large sensor of the G-series and squeezed it into a compact camera body that’s only slightly larger than a regular compact. Not only that, they’ve included full manual controls, and a unique manual control ring that’s not even found on the G-series. All this would have been exciting enough, but they even threw in a fast f/2 lens, which is no less of a shot across the bow for near rival Panasonic LX3 which also features an f/2 lens.

Contact lenses to get built-in virtual graphics – tech – 12 November 2009 – New Scientist
A contact lens that harvests radio waves to power an LED is paving the way for a new kind of display. The lens is a prototype of a device that could display information beamed from a mobile device.Realising that display size is increasingly a constraint in mobile devices, Babak Parviz at the University of Washington, in Seattle, hit on the idea of projecting images into the eye from a contact lens.
One of the limitations of current head-up displays is their limited field of view. A contact lens display can have a much wider field of view. “Our hope is to create images that effectively float in front of the user perhaps 50 cm to 1 m away,” says Parviz.

The University of Washington team will present their prototype at the Biomedical Circuits and Systems (BioCas 2009) conference at Beijing later this month.

PowerGenix NiZn rechargeable AA batteries: finally, some cells worth buying
Naturally, these will also keep your wireless keyboard, mouse or remote ticking for a long, long time, but it’s their ability to shine even in high-drain applications that really impressed us. The economics of it just make these tough to ignore: a 4-pack of Energizer’s ‘Ultimate Lithium’ AA cells can be had for around $7 to $10, while the 4-pack of PowerGenix batteries cost just a few bucks more (charger notwithstanding). If you’re a power user that eats through 8, 12 or more AA cells at every stop, it’s a no brainer to make the switch to NiZn. If you find yourself buying batteries around once per year, you’re probably better off sticking with your current habits. But hey — at least there’s finally a great solution for those of us who’ve been procuring more batteries than toilet paper over the past few years.

Sumitomo 3M Showcased 3D Panel Viewable with Naked Eye at FPD International 2009 » My Digital Life
The Japanese company utilizes the concept of directionality of how light travels and with individual eye receiving a light beaming from independent light source to left and right eye respectively, the displayed images can be visualized as 3D view when both are synchronized and analyzed by human brain. The theory seems to be simple but it has to utilize a special made Dome-shaped lenses with prism based structures to generate the right directionality required for the special effect without the need of additional bulky glass as being practised in conventional method. Good thing is, there is possible to switch between 3D and 2D view by just controlling the time of light beaming to be reaching both eyes at the same time in case there is a need to display 2D view as desired during certain circumstances, for instance, when reading full text-based online material.

World’s first commercial application of DSSC solar technology is in the bag
The first commercial shipment of low-light, ultra thin, solar cell technology called DSSC (dye-sensitized solar cells), created by G24 Innovations, has been sent to Hong Kong-based consumer electronics bag manufacturer, Mascotte Industrial Associates for use in backpacks and bags. Ideal for clothing and portable applications, DSSCs are less than 1mm thick, inexpensive, don’t contain silicon or cadmium and can even operate indoors, making them ideal for powering cell telephones, cameras and portable electronics. The company says DSSCs also can be embedded into tent material to power LED lighting systems for camping.
