Last Monday morning, more cars than usually were crowding the road through the Heidelberg “Neuenheimer Feld” Campus. A parking lot had been reserved for guests, and signs all over the Campus showed the way to a “Press Conference”. Later I learned that all this gathering was for the opening ceremony of the Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Center (HIT).

With a background in heavy-ion physics from Frankfurt University, it would have been hard for me not to have heard of this project before: Kind of a large spin-off of the GSI facility near Darmstadt, the Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Center is a dedicated heavy-ion accelerator for deployment in radiotherapy to treat tumours. It is the first medical heavy-ion machine in Europe.

They were coenzyme Q10, found in mackerel, sardines and spinach, and alpha lipoic acid, which is found in liver and potatoes.

Dr Ralph Holme, of the Royal National Institute for Deaf People, said: ‘This research is an important step towards finding effective ways to halt age-related hearing loss.’

But he acknowledged further research was needed to ‘gauge the real significance of these findings to the human population’.

The researchers suggest the findings indicate that the HF dark chocolate could protect the skin from ageing effects of exposure to sun, such as wrinkles, and the most likely mechanisms are the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of the flavanols. The study did not look at the long term effects, and the high flavanols chocolate used in the experiment is not generally available in stores.

Previous research has suggested dark chocolate can also reduce the risk of blood clots, prevent premature births, lower blood pressure, reduce the pain response to heat, and protect against bowel cancer. Swedish researchers also reported earlier this year that consuming dark chocolate a couple of times a week slashed the mortality rate for heart attack patients. It has also been shown to cut the risk of dementia and boost brain power.
