Here’s one area Romania does not want to ‘catch up with the rest of the EU’ – obesity. The latest study by Eurostat shows that Romania has the lowest incidence of obesity among the 19 EU Member States surveyed, with 8% of women and 7.6% of men recorded as obese. At the other end of the scale is my own country, the United Kingdom, where almost one in four women are obese (23.9%) and 22.1% of men.

I am no nutritionist so I can’t offer a scientific explanation as to why Romanians are in much better shape than Brits. But here are a few ideas.

Jawbones are ‘shaped by diet’

Diet has shaped human jaw bones; a result that could help explain why many people suffer with overcrowded teeth.

The study has shown that jaws grew shorter and broader as humans took on a more pastoral lifestyle.

Before this, developing mandibles were probably strengthened to give hunter-gatherers greater bite force.

The results were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

“This is a fascinating study which challenges the common perception that there has been little recent change in the morphology of humans,” said anthropologist Jay Stock from the University of Cambridge.

One development source told Eurogamer that Kinect 2 will be so powerful it will enable games to lip read, detect when players are angry, and determine in which direction they are facing.

Kinect 2 can track the pitch and volume of player voices and facial characteristics to measure different emotional states.

Forum leaks spill Ivy Bridge model details

The folks at CPU World have gleaned new details on Intel’s upcoming Ivy Bridge lineup from information leaked in several forum posts. The information is split between two articles and covers 18 different CPU models. Based on those model specifications, it looks like Ivy Bridge will be a native quad-core design with 8MB of last-level cache, just like its Sandy Bridge predecessor.

The wireless pacemaker as small as a grain of rice

What’s so special about this new version?
Usually a pacemaker’s battery is connected to the electrodes through a complex system of leads fed through a person’s veins. This new device, called a wireless cardiac simulation (WiCS) system, has no wires at all. Instead, it uses ultrasound to transmit signals and energy between the battery and electrodes, says Duncan Graham-Rowe at Technology Review. The implantable receiver is about the size of a “grain of rice,” and converts ultrasound signals into heart-regulating electricity.

Potentially. By eliminating wires, the device “simplifies the delivery and implantation of the system and means you can put the electrode in a place where it can better mimic the body’s natural electrical-to-muscle movement,” says Andrew Diston, head of global medical technology practice at Cambridge Consultants, which developed WiCS along with EBR Systems. Plus, “all leads are prone to failure, especially when they are exposed to continual movement inside the body.” This new device means less invasive surgeries and less chance of patient infection.

Dacă nu mănâncă mereu, încep să consume rezervele de energie şi dau jos muşchii rapid. Au o poftă de mâncare incredibilă şi o digestie atât de rapidă încât în două-trei ore li se goleşte stomacul. Şi puii de curte ar începe să pună carne pe ei dacă ar fi băgaţi la un regim de îngrăşare intensivă”, mai spune fermierul.

Puii de carne nu sunt neapărat forţaţi să crească în timp record, precizează şi producătorii. Aceasta este o caracteristică a rasei. “Aşa sunt croiţi genetic. Puii crescuţi pentru carne asta fac toată ziua: mănâncă. În SUA s-au utilizat şi cred că încă se mai utilizează antibiotice ca să accelereze creşterea, dar, în ţara noastră, legea interzice administrarea lor în alt scop decât în tratarea unor boli. Ele se elimină din organism într-un anumit număr de zile, iar legea interzice sacrificarea înainte de acest termen”, ne-a declarat Cristian Călin, PR ManagerAgricola.

Medicii nutriţionişti ne liniştesc şi spun că amestecurile cu care sunt hrăniţi puii gigant sunt naturale şi perfect sănătoase. Nu sunt dopaţi cu vitamine şi minerale.

“Furajele acestea conţin amestecuri perfecţionate, care nu sunt toxice pentru organism: cereale, soia, minerale, pe care le iau şi oamenii. Acum ceva timp li se dădea şi făină de peşte, dar ea a fost interzisă. Puii nu sunt în niciun caz dopaţi cu vitamine şi minerale, aşa cum ne imaginăm, pentru că ar muri. În rest, medicamente se dau doar pe baza reţetei veterinarului, iar hormoni de creştere nu se pun”, spune medicul nutriţionist Corina Zugravu.
