S-a inventat vaccinul împotriva… cariilor

Python hearts may hold key to healthy heart growth in humans
The expanded python heart appears remarkably similar to the larger-than-normal hearts of Olympic-caliber athletes. Colorado researchers report they’ve figured out how the snakes make it happen.
“It’s this amazing biology,” said Leslie Leinwand, a molecular biologist at the University of Colorado Boulder, whose team reports the findings in Friday’s edition of the journal Science. “They’re not swelling up. They’re building (heart) muscle.”
Reptile biologists have long studied the weird digestion of these snakes, especially the huge Burmese pythons that can go nearly a year between meals with no apparent ill effects. When they swallow that next rat or bird or in some cases deer something extraordinary happens. Their metabolism ratchets up more than 40-fold, and their organs immediately start growing in size to get the digesting done. The heart alone grows a startling 40 percent or more within three days.
Leinwand, who studies human heart disease, stumbled across that description and saw implications for people. An enlarged human heart usually is caused by chronic high blood pressure or other ailments that leave it flabby and unable to pump well. But months and years of vigorous exercise give some well-conditioned athletes larger, muscular hearts, similar to how python hearts are during digestion.
So Leinwand’s team led by a graduate student who initially was frightened of snakes ordered a box of pythons and began testing what happens to their hearts.

Grant Hamlet.

Giant unicorn-whales with tusks? That’s why I pay my licence fee
Here is what I do when I’m feeling down about the country: I load up the Wikipedia page for the BBC Natural History Unit and click on the “In Production” link. Happy sighs ensue.
The unit’s latest product, aired on Wednesdays, is Frozen Planet, a majestic tour of Arctic and Antarctic wildlife ably narrated by Sir David Attenborough, an 85-year-old man who insists on travelling to the south pole while people many decades his junior make a small noise whenever we sit down.

Stem-cell find breathes new life into lung repair
“There is new hope for heavy smokers, people with asthma and those with chronic lung scarring. Stem cells have been discovered that rapidly rebuild alveoli, the tiny air sacs in lungs – a finding that could herald new treatments for people with damaged lungs. Meanwhile, a signalling molecule that drives regeneration of lung tissue has also been found.”

Smarter cameras help you take slicker snaps
“Photos taken with a small aperture have a large DoF, meaning more of the frame is in focus, but less light gets into the camera. This means it takes longer to achieve the correct exposure and can lead to a blurry photo if the subject is in motion. Using a larger aperture solves that problem but narrows the focus, blurring the background or foreground.
Now Sam Hasinoff, a software engineer at Google, has a solution that gives photographers the best of both worlds. He takes multiple wide-aperture photos with different DoFs and combines them to create a picture with a DoF equivalent to a small-aperture photo but taken in a fraction of the time, since the wider aperture reaches the correct exposure level much faster. His method, called light efficient photography, automatically calculates which combination of photos will produce the desired picture for a selected exposure”

Invisible glass invented in Japan
“Their new substrate can hardly be seen simply because light is hardly reflected – quite unlike ordinary glass. Nippon Electric Glass Co. Ltd. is the company behind this new “invisible glass” that was exhibited it at FPD International 2011. I sure hope that commercial spaces and retail stores will not install this on their premises, as it would certainly result in more accidents if there were more of “me” in this world.”

Daily aspirin cuts risk of colorectal cancer
“It provides the first evidence that aspirin is effective in reducing the very high risk of cancer that these individuals have,” says Peter Rothwell of the University of Oxford, who earlier this year published results suggesting that a daily dose of 75-mg aspirin for more than five years reduced the risk of death by around 34 per cent for all cancers and as much as 54 per cent for gastrointestinal cancers, such as oesophagus, stomach, bowel, pancreas and liver cancers.”

UK scientists grow super broccoli
“An AP reporter who tasted the new broccoli found it was the same as the regular broccoli. Scientists, however, said it should taste slightly sweeter because it contains less sulphur.
Glucoraphanin works by breaking fat down in the body, preventing it from clogging the arteries. It is only found in broccoli in significant amounts.
To create the vegetable, sold as “super broccoli,” Mithen and colleagues cross-bred a traditional British broccoli with a wild, bitter Sicilian variety that has no flowery head, and a big dose of glucoraphanin. After 14 years, the enhanced hybrid was produced, which has been granted a patent by European authorities. No genetic modification was used.”
