Hydrogen ‘to become a viable alternative to petrol’ thanks to new process that makes gas behave like liquid

“The development has been to turn hydrides into fibres or beads, 30 times smaller than a human hair, through a process of electro-spinning. This produces a white tissue-like material that can be controlled to capture and release hydrogen.

The encapsulation process protects the hydrides from oxygen and water, prolonging their life and making it possible to handle them safely in air and because it behaves like a liquid, current infrastructure will need minimal modification.

‘You can use tankers to carry the material around,’ said Bennington. ‘You can take it to forecourts and then you can pump it into the vehicle and give the customer the same kind of experience they have now.’

All part of the reason Cella Energy believe their process could herald a new era of carbon-free motoring.

‘The experience that most people have now is using regular liquid fuels where it takes three minutes to fill your vehicle and then you can travel 300 miles,’ said Stephen Voller, Cella Energy’s CEO. ‘Now you can have exactly the same experience with hydrogen but you can’t have that experience with an electric car.’

The company said hydrogen could be an economically viable alternative to fossil fuels if the gas is produced with renewable energy sources like wind or solar. It has three times more energy than petrol per unit of weight and could power cars, planes and other vehicles that currently use hydrocarbons.”

Samsung begins mass production of ‘transparent’ LCD panel

“Samsung Electronics announced today that it began mass production of the 22-inch transparent LCD panel in March this year.

The panels come in two colors, the black-and-white type and the color type, and they have a contrast ratio of 500:1 with WSXGA+(1680*1050) resolution.

Compared with the conventional LCD panels that use back light unit (BLU) and have 5% transparency, Samsung’s transparent LCD panel boasts the world’s best transparency rate of over 20% for the black-and-white type and over 15% for the color type.

The transparent LCD panel has a high transparency rate, which enables a person to look right through the panel like glass, and it consumes 90% less electricity compared with a conventional LCD panel using back light unit.

It’s because a transparent LCD panel utilizes ambient light such as sun light, which consequently reduces the dependency on electricity for generating power. “

Quadrators: The robots able to hit a ball to and fro while hovering in the air

While the CDAS researchers are pleased with the results, they have yet to find an obvious application for two robots that can play tennis with each other.

One comment on YouTube seems to sum up their predicament: ‘The coolest stuff in the world is always the most useless.’

It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! It’s … a New Seagull-Like Robot Spy Drone!

In fact the robot is so astonishingly convincing in flight it really could pass for a genuine seagull from a distance–a feat of biomimicry that Festo is clearly proud of. The company notes: “Festo has succeeded in deciphering the flight of birds.”

If true, that solves a riddle as old as time. The robot isn’t stuffed with helium, instead it relies on ultra-light materials like carbon-fiber and sensitive control electronics to give it a total mass of around 0.4 kilograms (33% less than an iPad 2).

The design secret behind its seemingly effortless flight is the fact its wings don’t simply beat up and down like many other ornithopter designs (the technical term for flying drones like this) but they also twist at “specific angles” much like a real gull’s wing will do–positioning the wing tips at the best angle for generating lift and spilling less waste air. An “active articulated torsional drive” is at the heart of it, aided by clever wing joints, accurate sensors for calculating the wing’s position in real time, and a low-weight motor that eats up just 25 watts. The bird even communicates its flight data back to the remote operator in real time, letting them adjust fine parameters like wing torsion in real time to achieve optimum flight.

Enough gum flapping though–check out its astonishing wing flapping in the video below.

Breakthrough solar panel demoed that could let future iPhones soak up rays

According to the publication which spoke to Wysips’ president Ludovic Deblois:

The technology will fully charge a typical cell phone battery in 6 hours of outdoor light, but it would take longer indoors to fully juice a handset. With the second-generation technology that will arrive next year, you’ll have enough juice for 30 minutes of talk after just an hour of charging. While those times seem long in comparison to typical AC or USB charging, this is all done with light and occurs seamlessly while you use the phone. Plus, the phone is always sipping energy–unless it’s in a pocket or purse.

Another benefit: A flatter battery design making possible thinner devices. Wypsis plan on rolling out a second-generation of this tech to handset makers, carriers and mobile display companies next year. That said, a solar panel iPhone 6 is definitely a possibility.

Acer introduces two B-series VA-LED monitors

“Acer has this week announced two new additions to its monitor offer – the 24-inch B243HLCOymdr and 27-inch B273HLOymidh, both of which are aimed for office use and feature LED backlighting (for a lower power draw) and VA (Vertical Alignment) panels (providing 178/178 viewing angles).

The two widescreens have a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, a dynamic contrast ratio of 100,000,000:1 (overkill marketing?), and provide a ‘Zero Bright Dot’ guarantee, which means they don’t have dots which will remain permanently bright.

The B243HLCOymdr also boasts an 8ms response time, 250 cd/m2 brightness and D-Sub plus DVI inputs, while the B273HLOymidh has a 10ms response time, a maximum brightness of 300 cd/m2, and D-Sub, DVI and HDMI connectivity options. The monitors’ stands allow rotating, tilting, height adjustment and even pivoting (for the 24-inch model).

The B243HLCOymdr and B273HLOymidh) are now shipping and have recommended price tags of €249 and €399, respectively.”

Monitor LED BenQ EW2430 24 inch 8 ms GTG black silver – Pret: 999,99 RON

“Many so-called mainstream monitors have seen the light of day over the years, but there are also those panels that stand out for their more advanced feature set, like a certain, recently-launched pair of BenQ monitors.

All those new high-end video cards, games and movies are just eager to land inside users’ systems.

This, of course, implies that high-end consumers will want to acquire a display solution capable of taking advantage of that graphical prowess.

That said, BenQ issued a press release not long ago, in which it revealed the existence and impending arrival of two new widescreen monitors.

They are dubbed EW2430 and EW2430V and combine the benefits of VA (vertical alignment) panels with that of highly-efficient and bright LED backlights.

Their diagonals measure 24 inches, while the resolution is, as one would expect, 1,920 x 1,080 pixels (Full HD).

The press release also mentions a fairly impressive static contrast ratio of 3,000:1, as well as a noteworthy dynamic contrast ratio of 20,000,000:1.

Furthermore, BenQ implemented various special image-enhancement features on the EW2430V, like Super Resolution, 3D Deinterlace and 3D Noise Reduction. To these is added PIP (picture-in-picture) support.

The rest of the assets are the same on both siblings, the list including multiple video inputs (Dual HDMI, D-Sub and DVI), plus four USB ports.

Finally, all the above are packed inside sleek, metallic frames and probably imply a not very accessible price point.

Unfortunately, no such details were provided, and the best idea about when one can expects ales to start in Europe is after January.

“The design of EW Series aims to satisfy the demanding eyes of audiovisual lovers,” says the press release.

“By using metallic materials as the stylish essence to project simple and refined look, they can be easily blend into any room and environments,” the announcement added. “

Detecting cancer, HIV with carbon nanotubes

“The researchers are currently starting to work on altering the device for HIV diagnosis. Toner’s first cancer-cell-detecting method is now being tried in several hospitals and it might be commercially available in a few years.

To many it may sound like the doctors are working on something that might resemble a tricorder like device in the near future. If that’s true, it would revolutionize the medical industry. Also it would be really cool.”

The Event might not be back, no one seems to mind

“Rumors abound that NBC’s The Event will not be back for another season. However, I don’t hear a thousand voices crying out at its loss.

Often when it’s time to report on the potential loss of a genre television show, especially if it’s sci-fi, it’s also time to report on the small but radically dedicated group of fans holding rallies, or signing petitions, or blowing up message boards, or shipping legumes to people, but this time, I just don’t see it.

Where are the fanatical fans of The Event? Is there no love for this series? Perhaps there are none, and perhaps it is not without good reason. “
