New record set for ferroelectric data storage
New record set for ferroelectric data storage
Using a pulse generator to alter the electrical state of tiny dots on a ferroelectric medium, Kenkou Tanaka and Yasuo Cho have successfully recorded data at around eight times the density of currently available hard disk drives.
Nanotechnology enables ultra high-def LCDs, cheaper stacked-electrode OLED screens
Nanotechnology enables ultra high-def LCDs, cheaper stacked-electrode OLED screens — Engadget
Pixel density enthusiasts, pay close attention, because science is ready to blow your minds — the University of Michigan has developed an LCD technology that can display their logo in a space just nine microns high. By creating a filter made of microscopic metal gratings with differently sized holes just a few hundred nanometers wide, researchers discovered they could precisely capture wavelengths associated to red, green and blue light, producing pixels roughly eight times smaller than those in the iPhone 4′s famous screen, and entire images that could practically fit inside a single dot of Kopin’s microdisplay.Meanwhile, OLEDs (which don’t require filters to produce their color) saw a nanotech breakthrough of their own last week, as a group at the University of Florida have discovered that carbon nanotubes can revitalize a once-inefficient but promising vertical stacking technique. Layering thin sheets of aluminum, carbon nanotubes, organic material and finally gold on top of a glass substrate, scientists have created OLEDs that promise to be cheaper, faster and require one-tenth of the power of those using polycrystalline silicon, and could theoretically be printed as a flexible display as well. Here’s hoping we’ll see the fruits of these fellows’ labors soon — we can’t wait to pen a follow-up to this epic fight.

The mind’s eye: How the brain sorts out what you see
The mind’s eye: How the brain sorts out what you see – life – 30 August 2010 – New Scientist
These findings seem to support the view emerging from several disparate fields of neuroscience – that the subconscious mind has a bigger role than previously supposed. When it comes to the mental faculties we prize as uniquely human, including creativity, language and aspects of memory and learning, subconscious thought processes are far from playing second fiddle to the conscious mind (New Scientist, 1 December, 2007, p 42).

Sir Cliff Richard: Pushing 70, yet he’s still got the body of a Young One | Mail Online
Sir Cliff, who turns 70 in October, peeled off for his 2011 calendar. He says the secret of his eternal youth is tennis three times a week, two glasses of red wine a day and a daily dose of lecithin – a supplement derived from soya beans, meat and eggs – which experts claim restricts the body’s ability to form fat.
He has also spent three years following the Blood Type diet, which means he no longer eats wheat or dairy products.

LG LEX8 to debut at IFA 2010
LG LEX8 – LG LEX8 to debut at IFA 2010
LG’s LEX8 is meant to be the prime example from the South Korea consumer electronics giant when it comes to the benefits of LED technology. Measuring a mere 0.88cm thin, it has a super slim 1.25cm bezel as well as1080p resolution at a 400Hz motion rate. According to LG, their very own Nano Lighting technology is capable of delivering a clearer, smoother picture compared to its competitors. While there isn’t any word on a US rollout, it seems likely that it will hit the IFA 2010 festival in Berli later this year. No idea on the price either, but you know what they say – if you have to ask, you can’t afford it anyways. Check out the LG LEX8′s specifications in the extended post.* NANO FULL LED TV
