GPU renderers proliferate, show newfound maturity

Over the last couple years, with help from CUDA and OpenCL, GPU renderers have steadily progressed to exploit the speed of the GPU without sacrificing rendering quality. Now it seems we’re spoiled for choice. There were a few on display here at SIGGRAPH, but the growing GPU renderer list is already impressive: iRay, Arion, Furryball, Octane (which I often use if I want a fast and stylish render, as seen above), V-Ray RT—and there’s even the free and open-source GPU version of Luxrender. There are probably others that I’m missing—it seems like a new GPU renderer is coming out every month.

Medicii au înlocuit extremitatea osului humerus cu o matrice biologică în care au injectat un ser ce conţinea un factor de creştere, care stimulează procesul de diferenţiere celulară. După patru săptămâni, organismele celor 10 iepuri au regenerat integral cartilajul şi osul suprimat, recăpătându-şi capacitatea de a se deplasa.

În opinia medicilor americani, “regenerarea cartilajului şi a osului pornind de la celulele suşă ale organismului gazdă, fără a extrage celule suşă din corp, poate conduce la câteva aplicaţii clinice reuşite” pentru pacienţii care au nevoie de regenerarea articulaţiilor genunchilor, umerilor, şoldului sau degetelor.

A survey has revealed the typical person who has bought Apple’s latest gadget is unkind and has little empathy for others.

They have been branded the ‘selfish elite’ by a poll of 20,000 consumers carried out by an American research company.

The £429 device has become the most desired gadget in Britain since its launch in May and 600,000 are expected to be sold before the end of the year.

But the next time you see someone sitting on a train smugly using theirs, take comfort from the fact they are probably not a nice person.

According to Tim Koelkebeck of MyType, which carried out the survey, iPad owners are are six times more likely to be ‘wealthy, well-educated, power-hungry, over-achieving, sophisticated, unkind and non-altruistic 30-50-year-olds’.

They are self-centered workaholics with an overwhelming interest in business and finance who cherish ‘power and achievement’ and will not cross the street to help others, he added.

On display were a room full of Samsung’s 9000-series HDTVs – LED backlit LCD displays which support High Definition 3D movies when used with active 3D glasses, make streaming digital content over a network via DLNA a breeze and provide excellent picture quality and clarity across the widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio panels. All that in a package so thin it’s amazing.

The RayModeler 3D display you’re seeing in this video is a prototype of the kind of device sci-fi storytellers have been dreaming up for years. LED light sources allow you to see an image from all angles, 360 degrees. Objects like faces and people appear realistic giving viewers a sense of depth because the left and right eyes are seeing different images. I saw a demo of the display recently at the Sony offices and looking at moving 3D holographic images was almost like looking into a crystal ball! You’ll notice in the video the images even react and move when prompted by the wave of a hand. Though the device can’t let you see into the future, it is the future of how we will display objects, game or even see advertisements or displays at stores.

Amazon.com plans to unveil a new, improved version of its Kindle reader tonight amid growing competition from Apple’s iPad and others seeking a piece of the hot electronic book market.

The next-generation Kindle is smaller and lighter than the previous version, with faster page turns, longer battery life, built-in Wi-Fi, and other upgrades. It’s the same price as before, $189, and for the first time Amazon is introducing a Wi-Fi only version, for $139.

That kind of price point could make Kindle attractive to the mass market consumer. But anyone hoping for a color display or touch screen will have to wait. Amazon said those features — which are central to the popular iPad — aren’t part of the new Kindle.

Obţinerea unui gel care poate regenera celulele din smalţul dentar şi are ca efect astuparea cariilor, ar putea însemna sfârşitul vizitelor la stomatolog pentru plombe, anunţă publicaţia britanică The Telegraph.

Conform oamenilor de ştiinţă francezi care au obţinut acest gel, în doar o lună dinţi grav cariaţi au redevenit complet sănătoşi, conform unor teste de laborator realizate pe cobai. Echipa de cercetători de la Institutul naţional pentru sănătate şi studii medicale din Paris a descoperit faptul că hormonul MSH, care stimulează formarea de melanocite, poate stimula şi regenerarea dinţilor.

Oamenii de ştiinţă au amestecat hormonul MSH cu o substanţă chimică denumită acid poli-L-glutamic. Acest amestec a fost apoi transformat într-un gel ce a fost aplicat pe dinţii unor cobai cu carii. În doar o lună aceste carii au dispărut. După cum transmite Agerpres, noul produs urmează să treacă prin noi serii de teste de laborator şi ar putea fi lansat pe piaţă peste 3 până la 5 ani.

Recent, o cercetare a unui spital american din Belmont a arătat că alimentele care conţin uridină, cum este cazul sfeclei de zahăr, pot preveni sau ameliora depresia.
