Hitachi-LG goes official with HyDrive: SSD-equipped optical drives landing in August

Hitachi-LG goes official with HyDrive: SSD-equipped optical drives landing in August — Engadget

Hitachi-LG outed most of the major details for its forthcoming HyDrive last week, but the company just officially took the wraps off the world’s first SSD-equipped laptop optical drive. Frankly, it’s sort of astounding it took this long for such an obvious idea to come to fruition, but now that we’re here, we fully expect other outfits to follow suit. Put simply, the HyDrive is a standard form factor optical drive (DVD burner or Blu-ray will be available), but there’s a 32GB or 64B SSD (not just a strip of NAND, we’re told) tucked below.

“Guvernul nu are măsuri anticriză. Acţionează ca pompierii”

“Guvernul nu are măsuri anticriză.

Dupa ce vor fi impozitate cu 16%, impozitele la termen in lei vor oferi romanilor randamente reale cuprinse intre -1 si 2,5% pe an, fata de 4% in prezent. Cu alte cuvinte, in unele situatii e posibil ca banii tinuti la banca in depozit sa se imputineze, din cauza randamentelor mici corelate cu efectul inflatiei. In aceste conditii, ce alternative viabile exista pentru a plasa economiile?

New method of computational quantum chemistry leads to posibility of huge scientific adavances in all areas

Fujitsu Supercomputer Achieves World Record in Computational Quantum Chemistry

For example, the Schrödinger equation enables scientists to determine how carbon dioxide (CO2) is transformed into oxygen (O2), what happens when two forms of matter are mixed, and how to formulate effective medicines. Through the computation of the Schrödinger equation, it is possible to explain the mechanisms of such chemical phenomena without the need for experimentation.

In reality, however, if the Schrödinger equation is precisely applied, it can become extremely complex and can turn into an enormous equation that holds little hope of being computable. Thus far, the equation has only been employed in cases where it can be relatively easily computed.

In 2001, Maho Nakata of Kyoto University and Professor Hiroshi Nakatsuji proposed a computational method for solving the optimization problem of the direct variational calculation of reduced density matrices, instead of solving the massive Schrödinger equation.

….
As a world first, the research team succeeded for the first time ever in precisely computing the optimization problem (using SDP) to reveal the behavior of the molecules ethane (CH3 only), ammonia (NH3) and oxygen (O2). Because the methodology can compute the behavior of complicated molecules without the need for experimentation, it has the potential to be applied in a variety of fields, such as the development of new drugs and new materials, as well as applications in physics, chemistry and engineering.

In addition, this research has opened up the possibility of using supercomputers for computations in the field of superconductivity – a feat which thus far no computer has been able to accomplish yet. Furthermore, the research is expected to contribute to the development of innovations that are presently impossible in the area of energy storage (power storage), and in the medical and electronics fields.

Hologram TVs that will put you IN the action in development

Hologram TVs that will put you IN the action in development | Mail Online

NHK, the Japanese equivalent of the BBC, have committed to selling the first holo-TV by 2020, and earmarked £2.8billion for the ambitious project.

Japan are so confident they have offered holographic broadcasts to the globe as part of their bid of the 2022 World Cup.

The images would be captured from 360 degrees by 200 high-definition cameras during each match and then transmitted as three-dimensional images, a technology that has been driven by Japan’s electronics giants.

Near-death experiences ‘explained’: Scientists believe it’s the last gasp of a dying brain

Near-death experiences ‘explained’: Scientists believe it’s the last gasp of a dying brain | Mail Online

Dr Chawla noticed moments before death patients experienced a burst of brainwave activity that lasted from 30 seconds to three minutes.

The activity was similar to that measured in fully conscious people. Soon after the surge the patients were declared dead.

‘We think the near-death experiences could be caused by a surge of electrical energy released as the brain runs out of oxygen,’ Dr Chawla told The Times.

‘As blood flow slows down and oxygen levels fall, the brain cells fire one last electrical impulse. It starts in one part of the brain and spreads in a cascade and this may give people vivid mental sensations.’

He added that he had seen the same phenomenon in around 50 other patients.

What’s Next for E Ink

Technology Review: Blogs: TR Editors’ blog: What’s Next for E Ink

On the floor of the exhibit hall at the Society for Information Display conference in Seattle this week were many amazing technologies. One of the things that impressed me the most was E Ink’s latest prototypes. The company still isn’t providing full color, video capable displays, but the picture on their latest screens has a better color gamut and it’s crisp and easy on the eyes. Other companies have leapfrogged E Ink with color, video-capable reflective displays, such as Qualcomm’s Mirasol, but E Ink’s electronic paper is getting better and better. (See the video below.)

New Color Screen Combines Beauty, Readability

Technology Review: New Color Screen Combines Beauty, Readability

If you’re looking to buy an e-reader, you can choose between a beautiful but battery-draining liquid crystal display (LCD), like the one in Apple’s new iPad, or a slow-switching but easy to read black-and-white one, like the one in Amazon’s Kindle. At the Society for Information Display’s annual conference this week in Seattle, Qualcomm MEMS Technologies is demonstrating prototypes of a screen that meets somewhere between these extremes. It shows video in color, and under full sunlight, but without draining the battery. The display will be in products by the end of the year.
