Chicago (IL) – It isn’t really a secret anymore that Ford is proud of its Fusion Hybrid car and the fact that it is rated as the most fuel efficient gasoline-powered midsize sedan in North America, but we have to admit that the results of the most recent gas-mileage challenge is still impressive. Using a stock car and some techniques that improve fuel efficiency, the Fusion Hybrid ran 1445 miles on one tank of gas.

Low-energy LEDs make debut
www.tgdaily.com:
NEW YORK – Renaissance Lighting has developed a range of low-energy LED lights that are much brighter and more efficient than ever before.
Its new, all white solid-state LED downlight fixtures have two and a half times more lumens per watt (efficacy) than previous generations, and are available in a downlight format.

Panda introduces cloud-based free antivirus
download.cnet.com:
The program uses Panda’s proprietary cloud computing technology, which they call Collective Intelligence, to detect viruses, malware, rootkits, and heuristics. It takes advantage of “millions of users,” according to Panda, to identify new malware almost in real time. Panda says that Collective Intelligence can classify new malware in under six minutes, and that it handles more than 50,000 new samples per day. The Cloud Antivirus works by classifying threats into executables that must be scanned immediately, and non-executables that are checked at a lower priority–usually when the computer is idle.
In exchange for using consumer data to build the Collective Intelligence database, Panda decided to offer the Panda Cloud Antivirus for free, said Pedro Bustamante, senior research adviser at Panda Security.

The £19 anti-wrinkle cream that actually works
www.dailymail.co.uk:
Two years ago, Boots produced a wrinkle cream so effective that stores sold out in a day.
On Thursday, when its latest product hits the shelves, the high street chemist sets out to show customers it has done it again.
Aimed at mature skin with more wrinkles than its sister lotion, No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum is said to be twice as good as normal moisturisers at plumping up the skin and smoothing away wrinkles.
And Boots is offering proof. A year-long study at Manchester University found that 70 per cent of those who used the £19.75 cream for a year had fewer, finer lines, the British Journal of Dermatology reported.
…
Following last year’s report on BBC’s Horizons that the Boots serum actually did help regenerate the skin’s elasticity, the cream sold out in minutes and queues formed with customers vying for pots. Sales soared to two every ten seconds

Supersticky robots to follow in geckos’ footsteps – video
www.newscientist.com:
Previous wall and ceiling climbers have used suction for locomotion. But suction has drawbacks: it requires lots of energy to drive a vacuum pump, and motion is limited to smooth surfaces like glass.
The new robots, however, rely on a “sticky” elastic polymer, or elastomer, that can adhere to a variety of surfaces, including wood, metal, glass and brick. The idea is to mimic the mechanism which geckos use to climb walls and walk upside down.

Chemical ‘caterpillar’ points to electronics-free robots

A chemical gel that can walk like an inchworm, or looper caterpillar has been demonstrated in a Japanese robotics lab.
The video above shows the material in action. It was created in the Shuji Hashimoto applied physics laboratory at Waseda University, Tokyo.
