Where does mass come from?
March 15, 2007
“The Standard Model of Particle Physics has been very successful
at describing the fundamental building blocks of the Universe.
However, in its original form, it does not account for how
particles acquire mass.
Peter Higgs of Edinburgh University suggested a mechanism by
which particles acquire mass by interacting with a new field (like
a gravitational field) filling all of space. Heavier particles
interact more strongly, whereas massless photons don’t
interact at all. The field produces a new particle called the
Higgs boson, and this is now considered part of the Standard
Model.”
